2014 | Heshima Kenya Fashion Challenge

The 2014 Heshima Kenya Fashion Challenge was held on November 12th, 2014 at Room 1520 in the West Loop. Five designers, including Meredith BanzhoffModahnikBorris PowellLagi Nadeau, and Katelyn Pankoke participated in the "Project Runway" inspired competition, which was emceed by Windy City LIVE co-host Val Warner and judged by members of Chicago's Fashion Community, including Dawn Bonasera Global Store Director, Louis Vuitton -The Magnificent Mile Chicago, Trevian Kutti, and Erica Strama.

In early November, competing designers received two Maisha Collective scarves chosen at random, and had two weeks to design one original women's look and one accessory. Looks were judged based on originality, wearability, demonstration of designer personality, and construction quality.

This year's winner of The 2014 Heshima Kenya Fashion Challenge was Kahindo Mateene of Modahnik.

The event celebrates and supports refugee girls and young women in Nairobi, highlighting their work in the Maisha Collective, Heshima Kenya's income-generating project in which they produce the unique, hand-dyed scarves that is featured in competition.

Beer was provided by Empirical Brewery, with wine provided by Wirtz Beverage.
